Saturday's medical exam

Yesterday we spent a long time with approximately
100 other adopting families
at the medical center where each child received a medical exam.
The doctor said Anna Joy's heart sounds good.
We were thankful to hear that,
but will have her heart checked in the U.S. soon after we get home.
Heart defects are common in people with Down's Syndrome.
Braden gave her a sweet big brother hug and kiss
before she went in for her exam.

Leaving Tianjin for Guangzhou

On Friday morning we went for our last time to the park
across the street from our hotel in Tianjin.

Braden and Lydia made goodbye cards for our guide.
We will miss her a lot!

Saying farewell to the Nikko hotel.
We made great memories there.

In the afternoon we made our way to the airport
to catch our flight to Guangzhou.

This was Anna Joy's first ride in an airplane.

She wasn't sure what to think at first,
but within several minutes in the air,
she fell asleep and slept  straight through the 3 hour flight.
We hope she will do as well on our 14 hour flight
from Beijing to Detroit!

We were exhausted by the time we reached
the China Hotel in Guangzhou,
but she was all smiles for daddy,
holding a Raven's football.:)

Last full day in Tianjin

The day began with a walk down Ancient Culture Street.

In one of the shops, this man did a painting for us
with Anna Joy's Chinese name in Chinese characters.

After our time on Ancient Culture Street,
we were taken to her finding place.
This is called the Baby Island.
It is a safe place where many Tianjin babies are abandoned.
The relative who abandons the child rings a bell
to notify the security guard.
After several minutes the baby is rescued,
giving relatives time to anonimosly slip away.

On the outside of the Baby Island,
this sign hangs.
We were told it reads something to the effect of...
"Think twice before doing this...
it is better for a child to grow up in a family."

The inside of this room is very small,
but warm and safe.

Although it was difficult to be there,
we are thankful for this place where Anna Joy
could be rescued and cared for.
I have found myself thinking of her birth mother
many times this week.
We will never know why she abandoned her little girl...
if she was forced to, or if she felt this was her only option.
But we are thankful she chose life for her baby,
and we are thankful that God
has chosen us to be this little one's forever family.

After visiting her finding place,
we were given the afternoon to rest as a family.
Then, we joined the other families for a nice dinner out.

Anna Joy was content with rice, rice and more rice!

We find ourselves falling more in love with her everyday.
She is an attentive, curious, funny and loving little girl...
and already, we can't imagine life without her!

A day of sightseeing in Tianjin...

Today we were able to tour part of her city.
Anna Joy is ready to go!

We enjoyed a ride in the Eye of Tianjin...
a huge ferris wheel that gives amazing views of Tianjin.

After the ride, we walked along the river that runs through the city.
It truly is a beautiful city.

Little princess.

After this, we enjoyed a stroll and lunch in the Italian district.

This is our guide, Vivian. She has been wonderful!

One of the best parts of any adoption journey
is meeting other adopting families.
The bonds we share are formed quickly,
and are very unique and special.

She has already begun to attach to us...bonding easily so far.

 Love this face:)

So sweet that she now has a daddy.

She likes trying on his shoes...anyones shoes, actually.:)

Today was fun, but we are all worn out:)
See you tomorrow!
